SAL is an arid flat island, is all but desert and subject to continuous high NE Trade Winds. Perfect for attracting wind surfing, power kiting and other wind sports enthusiasts. The presence of the international airport has made this the preferred location for large “all in resort” developments. There is much construction underway with plans for several golf courses and marinas. The beach at Santa Maria is beautiful, but this is the only opportunity to use that word in connection with Sal!

Most of the tourist developments are in the south making the most of Santa Maria beach. New resorts, including the Riu (1,000 room holiday compound), are on the east coast from Murdeira going south. Espargos is the main Cape Verdean town with much evedence of local building, refecting the influx of tourist Euros. Sal is not an island to explore or experience any of the delights of Cape Verde. But, as a place to be exposed to reliable hot weather, it does exactly what it says on the tin.
